When it rains, it pours.
Hot off the heels of Frankie Edgar pulling out of his featherweight title fight against Max Holloway at UFC 218, we’ve now learned that Dominick Cruz has broken his arm and will be unable to fight Jimmie Rivera at UFC 219. The news comes to us via Ariel Helwani, and while they say don’t shoot the messenger, maybe shooting Ariel would delay terrible news like this for an extra day or two.
Dominick Cruz is out of the UFC 219 fight vs. Jimmie Rivera, sources say. Broken arm. TBD at this time what they’ll do with Rivera.

Cruz is the former WEC and UFC bantamweight champ and defended the belts four times before a series of injuries took him out of action from 2011 to 2014. He returned to action just as dominant as when he left, taking the title off TJ Dillashaw in January of 2016 and defending it once before dropping it to Cody Garbrandt in December.
This fight with Rivera was set to put him back into a position to challenge for the belt. The 135 pound division seems to be in the throes of a rock paper scissors situation between Cruz, Garbrandt, and Dillashaw. But with this broken arm, it could be a while before Dominick can come back and haunt TJ Dillashaw with his superior movement.
UFC 219 is still lacking a main event, something Dana White says should be resolved over the next few days. Here’s the card as it stands, sans Cruz vs. Rivera, goddammit.
- Edson Barboza vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov
- Cynthia Calvillo vs. Carla Esparza
- Matheus Nicolau vs. Louis Smolka
- Carlos Condit vs. Neil Magny
- Khalil Rountree vs. Gokhan Saki
- Rick Glenn vs. Myles Jury
- Emil Meek vs. Kamaru Usman
- Marc Diakiese vs. Dan Hooker
